French VFX Giant BUF Expands With Canadian Base

The European company, which did work on "Life of Pi," will open an office in Montreal to create CGI images for live action and animated movies.
French visual effects and animation giant BUF has finally unveiled plans to expand into Canada.

BUF, which has been eyeing Canada as a new international base for some time, is to launch a Montreal subsidiary, BUF Canada.
The expansion will create 125 jobs over the next three years creating CGI images for live action and animated movies.

BUF setting up in Montreal follows similar moves by Technicolor, Gravity VFX creator Framestore, Cinesite and Moving Picture Company, thanks to the offer of generous federal and Quebec tax credits and subsidies for digital work completed locally.

BUF has completed VFX on projects like Life of Pi, The City of Lost Children, Fight Club, Matrix, Avatar, Thor, Batman Begins and Batman: The Dark Knight.

"Montreal is a young and dynamic city with an outstanding digital imaging background. Softimage revolutionized the visual effects world almost 30 years ago, and, since then, the metropolis has continued to innovate and has made a name for itself on the international level," said Pierre Buffin, founding president and CEO of BUF, in a statement Monday.
